Stories ARE the work. While data is the new currency, stories are the connective threads that give the data meaning. How do we listen for them—and tell them? Why do stories matter? What skills and tools do we need in order to turn data into stories?

What will we do?
This one-day workshop will create an interactive space for us to discover stories together, find creative and impactful ways to listen for and build stories, and use visual language to express the stories we need to tell. We will focus on identifying stories in our work, learning storylistening and storyshaping techniques, and developing our skills by using simple visual storytelling tools.
How should I prepare?
Bring a storytelling challenge from your own work (whatever you conceive “your work” to be). Using your real-world examples, we will help each other to find our stories, hone them, and tell them in new, compelling, and memorable ways.
Is this workshop really for me?
This workshop is designed for anyone who wants to use stories more powerfully. A background in art, illustration, or graphic facilitation is NOT required. Participants from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines are welcome. All you will need is a desire to discover a story you would like to tell in a real-life context and a willingness to help others shape theirs. Join us!
What's included?
All workshop materials including a special Neuland ambassador marker kit, as well as lunch and coffee breaks
About the facilitators...
Sophia Liang is passionate about people and enabling sustainable communications within teams and inside organizations by utilizing the power of visual communication. She has an extensive background in designing experiential learning events with a focus on creating moments that matter. Her background has taught her that in order for people to truly listen and understand one another, they must be engaged on multiple sensory levels. Remember the last time you pulled out a piece of paper and pen to draw a diagram to illustrate your point? That's what she does with her clients every day — listening, focusing, and synthesizing ideas into bite-size chunks to enable more productive and engaged collaboration.
Anthony Weeks is an illustrator, documentary filmmaker, and visual storyteller based in San Francisco, CA. He has more than 16 years of experience working with senior-level product and strategy development teams to think visually and turn data into stories. In the role of public listener and illustrator, Anthony collaborates with project teams to create visually rich chronicles and murals of conversations in real time. The visual storytelling facilitates dialogue, engages participation, clarifies vision, and animates the process of ideation.
